Release confirmation therefore remains a San Francisco Sheriff's and San Francisco court issue.

A person housed at County Jail #3 may be released locally after court or sentence clearance, moved back through intake/release processing, transported for court, transferred to CDCR, taken to a hospital, or held for another authority. If the record says release from San Francisco Sheriff's custody but the person is not home, check whether the event was a transfer, court movement, detainer-related notice, or another custody path.

About County Jail #3

County Jail #3 is the out-of-city facility that most often creates jurisdiction confusion. It was formerly known as County Jail #5 and is now the largest active San Francisco jail. For release research, its location affects pickup and visitor logistics but not the identity of the record custodian. A person housed there is still in the San Francisco Sheriff's custody stream until release, transfer, court action, hospital movement, or another authority changes that status.

The Sheriff's page describes public transportation options, and the research notes a free on-demand Flywheel visitor transport service beginning February 1, 2026 from 598 Geneva Avenue to the jail for visitors. That transport detail is useful for visits and family logistics, but it is not a custody search tool. Release confirmation still comes from Sheriff, VINE, court, or records channels.

Request a Jail #3 Record

For a records request, identify County Jail #3 and include full name, date of birth if known, SF number, booking number, approximate booking and release dates, court case number, and the record type requested. If the person was transferred, ask for the custody movement record rather than assuming a community release. If the person was sentenced to CDCR, pair the jail record with CDCR/CIRIS and the court judgment.

If an online search fails, broaden by custody system, not by guessing the wrong county: check San Francisco court, VINE, Sheriff records, CDCR if state prison appears, BOP if federal custody appears, and ICE ODLS if immigration custody appears.

San Francisco's immigration policy also creates a separate record boundary. The Sheriff says the office does not arrest people for civil immigration violations and does not hold anyone over after a court has ordered release, while describing narrow criteria for release-date notice to ICE. Keep any local Sheriff release event separate from a later federal immigration record.
